Lyme Disease in Pets OverviewThe manifestation of Lyme disease (commonly misspelled as lime or lyme’s disease) is completely different in animals versus humans. Humans normally develop a bull’s eye type rash after being bitten by a tick that carries Borrelia burgdorferi. The rash is often accompanied by flu-like symptoms. In animals, most commonly dogs and horses, an illness does not typically occur from a tick bite and it takes weeks to months before the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease in pets and animals noticed.
Lyme disease symptoms in dogs and other animals include:- Fever
- Arthritis (lameness, swollen joints)
- Chronic joint disease
- Heart and neurological disorders (rare cases)
Glomerular disease, a kidney disorder, in dogs and horses can be caused by long term Lyme disease. If your dog or other pet shows signs or symptoms of Lyme disease, Central Florida Research Lab’s Lyme Disease Antigen Test by Flow Cytometry is an accurate test which will help confirm Lyme disease in your animal. Contact CFR to find out more information about how we can help you with a Lyme disease test for your special pet.
