Treatment Options

Once a patient is diagnosed with Lyme disease, normally a doctor will prescribe a treatment program based on a few varying factors. Prior to treatments Lyme disease tests are in order, make sure your doctor orders the most accurate Lyme disease test from Central Florida Research. Factors that influence treatments include:
  • Time since infection
  • Age of Patient
  • Symptoms

Regardless of the factors of influence, traditional treatments are medicinal.

Antibiotic Treatments

Lyme disease is treated with oral antibiotics, typically they are;

  • Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin), which was approved by the FDA in 1996 for the treatment of early Lyme disease.
  • Amoxicillin
  • Doxycycline (also effectively treats most other tick-borne diseases; not given to children under age 9, pregnant women, or women who are breastfeeding because it can stain the permanent teeth developing in young children or unborn babies)
  • Penicillin
  • Erythromycin (for people allergic to penicillin)
